The mod is best used on a fresh play through.

You should have very little trouble crafting the first set with items and money you'll already have at the start of the game. Once crafted, start adventuring, and don't be surprised if you find pieces of the armors as you adventure and level up.

If this makes the game easier than you want, just increase the difficulty or download one of the many great mods that increase difficulty.
